Hi, I do not celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk. Nor do I celebrate what he chose to do with his one precious life. What I do feel is immense sadness — for the hate, division, and bullying that permeate our politics and our daily lives. But today, I am most concerned with the impact this is having on our kids. Today, I can't help but find myself back in the classroom with a group of 8th graders shortly after Trump got elected to his first term. A student, who barely ever said a word in class, raised his hand and asked a question that still echoes in me today: “How come we spend all this time talking about bullying and harassment in school when our president bullies people on TV all the time? We would get detention." I was a bit taken aback. But I was also glad he felt safe enough to bring it up. The conversation that followed was powerful and all the students were engaged. Which brings me to today ... Our kids are always paying attention. Even when it looks like they aren’t. And so WE must pay attention. Today I felt compelled to write about that memory and what it means for us now. I also shared some resources to help parents and teachers navigate these conversations with kids.
